Why DSPs ?

DSP control is more and more used in industrial products ranging frim power electronics applications to intelligent motion or mechatronics applications. In fact, DSP control combines the advantagages of digital and analogue controls. On the one hand, we gain stability ( no drift, offset and ageing ), precision, noise immunity, flexibility,programmability as well as the ability to realise very complex and adaptive control strategies. On the other hand, we reach sampling times adapted for very fast systems, traditionally controlled by analogue means. Also, DSP control often allows an important reduction of the component counts hence increasing the global reliability. Thanks to the considerable advances in the microelectronics field, it is now possible to include more and more cheap intelligence in a system. Therefore, for many systems it becomes cheaper to realise a DSP control rather than a trditional analog control.

The following sample applications have all been realized using our DSP-based products.

Power electronics UPSs Uninterruptible Power Supplies need a very efficient regulation to provide a good power quality to the consumer. Fast control algorithms are required. The communication interface is used here to exchange the information required for load sharing between different units of a redundant system.
Active Filters. Digital active filtering is a recent application of modern power electronics. Good harmonic cancellation need high precision measurements and a powerful control system, able to compute FFT in a short time, while doing current control at a high sampling rate.
Motor drivers Motor drives is a common application of power electronics. With the DSP technology it is possible to realize flexible and powerful motor drivers with excellent performances. Typical features include : digital current control, auto-tuning speed and position controllers, identification and compensation of parasitic torques.
Supercapacitors management Supercapacitors are recent and promising components to be used for energy storage in various applications. The use of supercapacitors needs a power management which requires a special interface for the control board.
others Miscelaneous laboratories are using DAVID in their research, such LEEI at ENSEEIHT in France, LEI ( laboratoire d'électronique industrielle) EIF(Ecole d'ingénieurs de Fribourg) and SUPSI(Scuaola universitaria professionale della svizzera italiana) in Switzerland.
Mecatronics Magnetic bearings Magnetic bearings are a typical mechatronic application requiring an important computing power. The multivariable position control needs a high sampling rate, while the decoupling algorithms involve matrix computations.
Inverse pendulum The inverse pendulum is a very common problem of dynamic control. A very challenging version of this problem has been realized at the Industrial Electronics Laboratory. Visit http://leiwww.epfl.ch/joe
Engine control Recent pollution regulation demands very sofisticated engine management strategies. Modern model based control algorithms requires high computing power. The FPGA can host the special interface needed to measure krankshaft position and to control injectors and ignition.
Education DSP workshops The low cost of our DSP boards makes DSP workshops cheaper. The easyness of use of our environment together with the modern FPGA design tools makes it possible a fast and efficient learning of the key features of the programmable logic.
